Climate in some popular cities in Vietnam

Vietnam is located in both tropical and temperate zone. It is characterized by strong monsoon influences, but has a considerable amount of sun, a high rate of rainfall, and high humidity. Regions located near the tropics and in the mountainous regions are endowed with a temperate climate.

The monsoon climate also influences to the changes of the tropical humidity. In general, in Vietnam there are two seasons, the cold season occurs from November to April and the hot season from May to October. The difference in temperature between the two seasons in southern is almost unnoticeable, averaging 3ºC. The most noticeable variations are found in the northern where differences of 12ºC have been observed. There are essentially four distinct seasons, which are most evident in the northern provinces (from Hai Van Pass toward to the north): Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

Following are details about climate in some popular cities in Vietnam:

1. Hanoi

In Hanoi there are four distinct seasons:  Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. But it is able to be divided into two main seasons: the rainy season from May to September (it’s hot, heavy rain), and the dry season from October to April (it’s cold, little rainfall). The annual average temperature is 23.2oC, but in winter the average temperature is 17.2oC. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 2.7oC in 1955. The average summer temperature is 29.2oC, with the highest ever recorded being 42.8oC in 1926. On average, there are 114 rainy days a year with around 1,800mm of rainfall.

Typical weather of north of Vietnam, Hanoi climate belongs to tropical monsoon temperature type: hot summer with high rainfall and cold winter, rare of rain.

Located in tropical zone, Hanoi has abundant radiation around year. Average total of radiation is accounted to 122.8Lcal/cm2, sunshine hour is 1641. June is hottest month and the temperature may reach to 38oC. The coldest month is recorded in January.

Hanoi receives relatively high humidity and rainfall. The average annually humidity is 79% and rainfall is 1,800mm a year.

Hanoi experiences four seasons a year. May to September are hot and rainy months. Dry winter lasts from November to March next year. Autumn and Spring are transition seasons of April to October. The weather changes follow four seasons, which contribute to diversified feature of Ha Noi’s climate.

2. Halong City

Climate of Halong City has typical character of oceanic temperature type with two separate seasons: summer lasts from May to October and winter is from November to April next year.

Located in tropical zone, Halong City receives average radiation 115.4 kcal/cm². Average annually temperature is 23ºC, the highest peak in June (28.6ºC) and the lowest point in February (16.7ºC). The yearly average humidity is 82.7%.

Due to of geography, Halong City is affected by North-East wind in winter and South-West wind in summer.

3. Sapa

Influenced by temperate and subtropical climate, the weather in Sapa is cool around year. The average temperature is 15ºC. May to August is rainy season. The average rainfall is 1,800mm a year.

In summer, the weather is not as hot as coastal delta area. Degree of heat is at night and 20ºC – 25°C in day time. In winter, frog makes Sapa usually cold, the temperature may drop to 0°C, and snow sometime falls.

Sa Pa experiences four seasons a day: cool spring in morning, sunny summer in midday, cloudy autumn in the afternoon, and cold winter at night.

4. Hue

It features a tropical monsoon climate, featuring all four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The spring is cool and warm, the summer is hot, the autumn is cool and the winter is cold. Average temperature is 25ºC. The best time for tourists is from November to April next year.

The weather is submitted to tropical monsoon climate divided into four distinct seasons: fresh spring, very hot summer, mild autumn and windy, cold winter. The dry season lasts from March to August.

It is hot with temperate rarely reaches to 39.5ºC. The rainy season lasts from September to February. It is quite cold with average temperature is 19.7ºC, but sometime down to 8.8ºC. In this time, it rains a lost, sometime lasts all day. If tourist would to avoid rainy, they come to Da Nang, 108km from south of Hue. In the mountain area, the weather is cool with the annual temperature is between 9ºC and 29ºC. The most convenient time to visit the area is from November to April.

5. Da Nang

Da Nang locates in tropical monsoon zone with high and stable temperature.

The yearly mean temperature is about 25.6ºC, the peak in June (29.2ºC) and the lowest point in February (21.2ºC). Separately, temperature of Ba Na Mountain in 1,500m averages from 17ºC to 20ºC. The city receives 1,355mm of rainfall annually, concentrated in October. Average annually humidity is 83.4%.

Due to of geography, Da Nang is affected by climate of the north and the south of Viet Nam, inclined to be tropical climate of the south. There are two distinguished seasons: dry season (from January to July) and rainy season (from August to December). Sometime, cold weather occurs in short time.

6. Nha Trang

Influenced by both of tropical monsoon and oceanic climate, Nha Trang has temperate climate. Average annually temperature is 26ºC, the highest peak in August (29.3ºC) and the lowest point in February (23.9ºC).

The yearly average humidity is 77%. The rainy season lasts two months. The city receives 807mm of rainfall a year.

7. Da Lat

With an altitude of 1,475m, Da Lat has temperate climate with an average annual temperature of 17.8ºC, highest in April (19.1ºC) and lowest in December (15.7ºC). The lowest average daily temperature is 15ºC and the highest is of 24ºC. Therefore, Da Lat has four seasons in one day: spring in the morning, summer in the afternoon, autumn in the early evening, and winter at night.

Dry season in Da Lat lasts from December to March and rainy season lasts from April to November. Da Lat is mainly influenced by the north-east monsoon in the dry season and the south-west monsoon in the rainy season.

When the north-east monsoon intermittently flows, Da Lat climate becomes dry. The sky is always bright, the weather is cool and comfortable. This is the best time for sports and tourism activities. The average humidity of this season is the lowest, about 82%.

The south-west monsoon in collaboration with tropical low pressures and storms brings Da Lat an average annual rainfall of 1,600mm.

8. Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City has a so-called subequatorial climate with high and stable temperature.

Average monthly sunshine reaches from 160 to 270 hours, average humidity is 79.5%. The yearly mean temperature is about 27.96ºC. While April has the highest average monthly temperature (30.5ºC), December is the lowest month (26ºC). The city has rainfall averaging around 1934mm.

There are two separate seasons. The rainy season lasts from May to November. It usually rains in decline of day, quite hard but in short time otherwise sometime it continually for all day. The dry season is from December through April next year.
